Pushkar Fair

Pushkar is a "City of Temples" , though not as much old but in number as generally claimed. The Brahma Temple is the most famous temple in the town and is said to be the only dedicated to Lord Brahma in India. A red spire marks the temple, and over the entrance gateway is the Hans (goose), the symbol of Brahma who is said to have personally chosen Pushkar as his place.he land of kings, Rajasthan is India at its most exotic and colourful best.
It is the home of the Rajputs, a great warrior clan, who have ruled this part of India for over 1000 years maintaining a code of chivalry and honour like that of the medieval European Knights. While temporary alliances and marriages of conveniences were the order of the day, pride and independence were always paramount.

THE GREAT PUSHKAR FAIR (RAJASTHAN)

This picturesque township and the sacred lake of Pushkar lies 11 km from Ajmer. Pushkar is separated from Ajmer by the Nag Pahar (Snake mountain). This beautiful lake surrounded by bathing ghats has its religious significance rooted in a myth. According to the Padam Puram, Lord Brahma was in search of a suitable place for a Vedic Yagya (sacrifice). While contemplating, a lotus fell from his hand on the earth and water spurted from three places. One of them was Pushkar, and Brahma decided to perform his Yagya there.
A lively and gigantic fair is held here every year on kartic Poornima (Full moon in Oct-Nov). Thousands of pilgrims and asthetics from far and near gather here to take a dip in the holy lake.
The fair is also the biggest camel market. Besides camels, horses and bullocks are sold and bought here. The people in their colourful attire enhance the cheerful mood of the fair.
Pushkar is internationally known for its colourful cattle fair when thousands of devotees from all faiths assemble to take a dip in the holy lake. Dance, music, gaily-attired folks and various cultural events add to the fun and chrisma of the occasion. The phenomenal camel races are the most interesting part of the fair augmented by cattle auction and colourful shops exhibiting beautiful handicrafts.
